I trained harder than anybody I knew and I got nowhere with it. 6 days a week, every set written down, and the tape kept handing me the same number.
Effort was never the variable that was holding me back. Muscle growth is a response to signals, and training sends some of those signals and not others.
Five pathways, running at the same time
The Enhanced Muscle Matrix splits the growth signal into 5 pathways that fire together. Androgen receptor activation. The growth hormone and IGF-1 axis. Insulin and nutrient partitioning. mTOR and protein synthesis. Neurological drive.
The book calls that set the Green Zone, and its claim is that running all 5 at once puts 10 to 20 pounds of new tissue on a trained man inside months. Run 1 of them harder and you get what I got for years.
Heavy resistance work does 2 of the 5 well. It loads mTOR through mechanical tension, and it recruits the nervous system. That is real, and it is exactly why beginners grow on nothing but a barbell and food.
Now look at what it leaves switched off. Training does not raise your androgen output to anything a lab would call a change. It produces a growth hormone pulse around the session, which is not the same thing as holding IGF-1 up across the 23 hours you are not in the gym. It does not decide whether the carbohydrates in your next meal go into muscle glycogen or onto your waist. Those are 3 separate pathways and no amount of intensity reaches them.
The slowest system sets your rate
The Law of Pathways in Chapter 5 states it plainly: the slowest system determines your overall speed. Strengthen that point and total progress accelerates.
That law is why adding volume to a saturated pathway does nothing. If mTOR signalling was never your bottleneck, more reps buy you fatigue and no tissue. You are pushing on the one door that was already open.
Training harder feeds the brake
The matrix has a second layer the book calls the Red Zone, and it exists to take the brakes off: cortisol regulation, myostatin suppression, inflammatory downregulation, CNS fatigue prevention.
Hard training raises cortisol. So the man who answers a stall by adding 2 more sessions a week is pushing a Red Zone pathway in the wrong direction while barely reaching 3 of the 5 Green ones. That is the mechanical reason a harder year can return less than an easier one. It is not a discipline problem and it never was.
What one signal does with no training change at all
65 healthy adults, aged 60 to 81, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, run for 2 years. One oral dose of MK-677 at 25 mg a day. Fat-free mass at 1 year was a primary endpoint. Fat-free mass dropped 0.5 kg in the placebo group and rose 1.1 kg in the MK-677 group, p less than 0.001. [1]
Nobody changed their programme. The youngest subject was 60. One input, on one pathway, and lean mass went the opposite direction from placebo over a year.
The Orange Zone runs all year
The Orange Zone is the environment: controlled inflammation used as a growth signal, blood flow and pump for nutrient delivery, recovery and sleep, mitochondrial efficiency, digestion.
Arachidonic acid before training to amplify the hypertrophy signal, then anti-inflammatory and healing agents after it for balance. Citrulline, glycerol, agmatine for delivery. Magnesium, apigenin, glycine and GABA at night to deepen sleep and extend growth hormone release.
The zones do not cycle the same way, and that detail is where most men lose what they built. The androgen and growth hormone layers run 8 to 12 weeks on, 4 weeks off. The Orange Zone never comes off, because you are not trying to outsmart a receptor with sleep. During the 4 weeks off, the Green Zone comes down and the Orange Zone stays up. That is when new tissue consolidates. Most people stop everything at once in the off weeks, watch the size come down, and blame the compound.
Decide the exit before the entry
Every receptor you push adapts to being pushed. The man who never comes off ends up needing more to get less.
4 weeks is roughly what receptor sensitivity needs to reset. Come back after that break and the same dose does more than it did the day you stopped. Set the exit date going in, as a date, rather than discovering it when bloodwork comes back ugly.
The other discipline that costs nothing: add one compound at a time. Every molecule in this matrix hits a different pathway, and pathways interact. Stack 4 new inputs in the same week and when something shifts you have no way to attribute it. You spent the cycle and learned nothing. One addition, 2 weeks, then the next.
What to measure, and when
Before you start anything: total testosterone, free testosterone, IGF-1, hematocrit, full lipid panel. One morning at a lab.
Run the same panel at week 8. IGF-1 tells you whether the growth hormone layer is doing its job. Hematocrit and lipids tell you what the androgen layer is costing you. Those 2 numbers decide whether you extend the cycle or take the 4 weeks off early, and they decide it earlier than the mirror does.
I ran a 12-week block on the ghrelin-receptor side of this and published the before and after panels, including fasting insulin and HbA1c, in my own MK-677 write-up. The IGF-1 response was the easy part. The glucose markers are the part that decides whether you should be running it at all.
The part of this I will not oversell
Chapter 9 pushes past hypertrophy into hyperplasia, the creation of new muscle fibres that stay after you stop training. What convinced me was watching one man live it for years.
Coach Trevor was living it when I met him. A pro-level physique on once-a-week training. No food tracking. Pizza, missed meals, and no crash coming off cycle. Muscle that stayed. He had been running that for years before I understood what I was looking at.
The honest state of the evidence is that fibre-number increases are demonstrated in animal models and contested in trained humans, where most physiologists hold that adult muscle grows by enlarging the fibres it already has. I have not put a needle in my own quadriceps and counted fibres, and neither has anyone who makes this claim on the internet. Gap, stated rather than papered over: a muscle biopsy fibre count before and after a Mass Blast block, in the same subject, would settle it
Animal data is earlier evidence, and rats get used because the biology is conserved. Strong in the model, not yet run properly in people. That is where hyperplasia sits, and I would rather say so than pretend the biopsy exists.
What is not in question is the part above it. The 5 pathways are measurable, the cortisol cost of extra volume is measurable, and the reason your last 3 years of training returned less than your first 3 is sitting in a panel you have probably never ordered.
Order the panel. Then pick the pathway you have been leaving switched off.
